Living In Bangkok Can be Relaxing
Bangkok is a city of rich culture of old and new. The mixture coexists comfortably. There are parts of the city that are unhurried and moving at a snail pace, while the business and the shopping district are fast moving.
I believe that visitors enjoy both aspects of the city. I want to talk about the cost of living of Bangkok.
Housing
I think this is a first concern for a visitor contemplating living here. You can get more details in my Bangkok Apartment section or Bangkok Condos section. But I would like to mention here that you can get a nice studio for under 15,000 baht per month and a one - bedroom unit for about 15,000 baht. A decent two bedrooms in a nice neighborhood will go for 18,000 – 20,000 baht. I am talking about a decent rate here.
For a more luxury two-bedrooms unit starts from 30,000 baht in a prime neighborhood.
Food
Food in Bangkok is very reasonable. You can get a good meal for 100 baht each. You can even go for less if you don’t mind the décor at some establishments. Now if you are cooking for your self, you could get by with a 1000 –1,700 baht per week for two persons; shopping at the modern supermarkets (Lotus, Big C).
Healthcare
Health insurance here is available. For a moderate plan (major medical), a 53 year old person with rather healthy condition could get by with 8,500 baht per year. This plan includes room (2,500 baht/day), 100,000baht/surgery, and others. An open-heart surgery in a good hospital can run you about 700,000 baht.
I have the above health plan and have been happy with it. I had used it and my wife had used it and it worked pretty well. Whatever ailment you have you can decide to use the local plan or the medical plan in the US or elsewhere; it depends on who pays the most.
Activities
There are activities galore here in Bangkok and the provinces. Thailand as a whole receives 15 million visitors a year, so you surely will find your niche of enjoyment.
